Out West 2009

Trip information
One of the benefits of Scouting is the ability to learn new skills and explore the world. In the summer of 2009 we are going to follow the path of the "Wild Bill" Hickock and Red Cloud out west. While we are on our journey, we will visit many historic and natural sights and taste cultures unknown to the scouts except through books and movies. We have also scheduled three Breakout days for the scouts to try the local waters and trails. This is a huge event and will require a lot of planning and work to accomplish.

Our plans are to travel from July 11th through July 18th 2009:

Saturday Flight to Rapid City, South Dakota
Sunday Mammoth Site, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument
Monday OVERNIGHT - Devil's Tower, Wyoming
Tuesday OVERNIGHT - Little Bighorn Battlefield, Montana
Wednesday Deadwood, S.D.
Thursday Breakout day - Hiking, fishing, swimming
Friday Badlands National Park
Saturday  Flight home

Being a Scout troop, this trip is different from a standard vacation trip.

The cost of this trip is the major consideration. It is not possible to have an exact price so far ahead of the trip due to airline and other reservation systems but we have approximated the cost at $1100 per person. This includes travel, accommodations, and food and entry fees. There will be an initial deposit of $200 required for this trip due in the fall of 2008 which reserves space on the trip. Our goal is to enlist your aid in finding those bargains and other opportunities to help defray the cost.

Initially we need to determine who is interested in going on this trip. Attendance for this trip will be extended to registered members of the Boy Scouts and Troop 22. Adults may participate and a minimum number will be required to attend for safety reasons.

For those Cubs and Webelos who are currently in Pack 22 and are considering crossing into Boy Scouts, this trip is an option. We will work with those scouts and their families wishing to participate and include them into all fund-raising opportunities to help defray the cost of the trip.

For all those participating in the fund-raising activities, the money raised will be split between all those involved in the activity. If participants change their minds and withdraw from the trip, their funds will be spread among the rest of the group. There is no refund or reassignment of funds raised by the troop to other purposes.

What activities are you willing to help with to raise the funds? We are planning on some now and hope you can come up with more ideas to help us on our way.

  • Fund-raising sales
  • Bake Sales
  • Yard Sales
  • Candy sales
  • Corporate Grants
  • Civic & Social Organization Grants

We know this is a huge undertaking and we are looking for lots of help. Please call Mr. Warner with any questions. We will have monthly updates at the Troop Committee meetings on this trip.
